Great Medium/Large Case
About a month ago I picked up the smaller SmaCase G160 for my Hero4 Silver after reading a number of favorable reviews. It is a solid case at a good price and can comfortably fit my camera in the waterproof case, 4 batteries, a charger with both wall and car adapters, a USB cable, a number of small mount pieces, and a Chesty. It's definitely small, so I can't fit my SmaPole S1 or my Contour Roam2, but everything listed above fits well and it's very well made. Since then the G260SL came on the market and it immediately piqued my interest. When Smatree offered me the opportunity to test the case in exchange for an honest review, I jumped at the chance.
Opening the box from Amazon it was typical Smatree quality packaging, the box fit the case perfectly and there's a nice full color sleeve around the case. When I opened it up I was pleasantly surprised to find another "cheat sheet" showing many of the potential configurations of the case. That's a nice touch that the G160 didn't have. Opening the case also revealed what is the only downside I've found so far, stinky foam. I had to let it air out, which helped quite a bit, but it isn't particularly pleasant smelling.
You can see in the pictures that there are many precut foam pieces that can be removed to configure the case. From just a picture it's hard to tell how many pieces there actually are, I count a total of 33 including all the nested pieces. Literally millions of possibilities. The foam is also different from the G160, this appears to be the high density EVA foam, which I like more. It's grippy and dense, holds things quite tight. Aside from the smell I'm a big fan.
Obviously this case can easily fit 2 GoPros and a lot of accessories. I was happy to find that my Contour Roam2 fits nicely in the second GoPro slot if you remove the lens cap, it's great to be able to keep both in the same case. All of the little mounts fit fine, you can dump them in the zippered pocket or make a compartment in the foam. The cheat sheet showed a suction cup mount fitting in the bottom section, so I gave it a shot. My Contour suction cup fit, but pushes into the zippered pocket. It might stretch it out, but it's nice that it can fit if I want it to. Unsurprisingly my SmaPole doesn't fit, it's just too long. Truthfully at 16", I don't expect anything but a monster of a case would fit it. Oh well.
As usual, the fit and finish are great. The embossed "S" on the front, the rubberized "SmaCase" on the zipper pulls and handle, and the carabiner really set this apart as a quality piece. It's not another rebranded off the shelf accessory out of China, it's an accessory that has had a lot of thought put into it and it shows. 5 stars, no question, it's an awesome case at a reasonable price point. I'm excited to see what else comes out of this company, everything I own by them has been great and I expect that trend to continue.
